Hi everyone, welcome to the new-look Bob’s Blog
For everyone who doesn’t know me, I’m Bob the banana plant who lives in Stamford Park conservatory. I’ve lived in there for decades, and I’ve welcomed lots of visitors into my house over the years I can tell you!
I was surrounded by lots of friends then. There was Olivia the orange tree, Percy Palm and Clive the cotton plant too. The house was warm and we flourished – we were magnificent; we even won awards!
People of all ages came to see us and they would look up at me with wonder because they had never seen anything like me before! This was exactly what John Nield (a local man who donated the conservatory to the people of Stalybridge and Ashton-under Lyne) wanted. He knew that the people of the towns would take great pleasure in seeing plants from other countries, and he built my house to be a fabulous landmark in Stamford Park.
All went well for over a hundred years, the locals enjoyed both the park and the conservatory and so many wonderful memories were made and shared with generations of townsfolk. Until six years ago…
But, things are changing! A large group of people are trying to re-open my house and bring back the legacy of John Nield. Please help to save my home by supporting this group via our Facebook page ‘Save Stamford Park Greenhouse’, the website #savestamfordparkgreenhouse, donating to ‘Save The John Nield Conservatory in Stamford Park’ Gofundme page and by promoting the issue throughout your own community.
Upcoming events include a raffle with some fabulous prizes (tickets can be purchased from The Music Academy Stalybridge, JRS Collectables Ashton, or by donating directly to the Save Stamford Park Greenhouse account NatWest Bank. Account number 37315412 Sort code 60-20-21).
Look out for more Banana fun over the coming months, but in the meantime…Go Bananas!
Bob
